EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES

DETAILS OF THE BEST EDUCATIONAL SITES IN BRITAIN.

  CAERLEON
The Legionary Museum at Caerleon is a phenomenal visit for children, especially when combined with the Roman remains in the town. The museum is part of the National Museum of Wales and a sizeable area has been set aside purely for children, including a reconstructed Roman barrack block, complete with child-sized armour and equipment that they can try on.
  CANTERBURY
The Roman Museum in Canterbury has something for everyone, but has devoted a deal of time and effort to educational resources. Children can try their hand at archaeological puzzles, colouring sheets and so on. The museum is not expensive and is centrally located in the city.
  DOVER
The Dover Painted House museum has well-put together displays and boards about Roman Dover and Roman Britain as well as the specific building that is the focus of the museum. As the staff are members of the Kent Archaeological Unit and the museum is solely owned and operated by them, they are very informative and helpful.
  MALTON
The museum at Malton is one of the better collections in the north, and there is a room dedicated purely to children, with numerous interesting and engaging items and activities, including a mail shirt and helmet to try on.
  SOUTH SHIELDS (ARBEIA)
Part of the Tyne & Wear Museums corporation, Arbeia is a free site, with reconstructed buildings, a two room museum, audio tour and a childrens' archaeological learning centre called 'Time Quest'. A reenactment group named Cohors Quinta Gallorum is based there and offers regular days at the site, teaching visitors about the equipment and tactics of the 2nd to 3rd Century Roman army.
  VINDOLANDA TRUST
The Vindolanda Trust consists of both the massive Roman site of Vindolanda and also the Roman Army Museum at Carvoran (Greenhead.) The museum at Greenhead is one of the best educational resources for children in the country and when combined with the site and museum at Vindolanda, they provide an excellent experience.
  WALLSEND (SEGEDUNUM)
The actual remains at Wallsend are comparatively meagre, but the presentation of the museum, the viewing tower, the reconstructed bath house and the whole setup is of the highest quality and largely directed at children. The facilities there are excellent and while a trip to Wallsend will keep the average adult occupied for at least an hour, there's a full day available for children.
