CARLESMOOR

  Quality of Remains
  Ease of Access
  Atmosphere & Setting

Usually marked on maps as an 'earthwork', the camp at Carlesmoor has only recently been identified as being of Roman origin. The camp is almost square and quite small, though only three sides survive well, the south being barely traceable. Little is known of the camp, though I have found references to the ramparts being of stone construction (which seems unlikely given its size and probable nature as a temporary camp.) Likely this is a training camp associated with the now-assumed fort just outside Grewelthorpe, which is much more defined, in a more habitable area and lies on a noted Roman road that leads north through Kilgram bridge (where there are remains of a ford) to Catterick. Carlesmoor is somewhat out of the way, and worth visiting only for the enthusiast. However, the area is full of lovely walks that pass right by the camp, and this makes a nice afternoon out (see the Crackpots Mosaic Trail for more details.)
