History & Occupation:

The Roman city of Divio, a settlement of the Lingones tribe, may have been a large and thriving civic centre, as is suggested by its location at a major crossroads of Roman roads. However, as Dijon is the capital of Burgundy and has grown to become a very large city, hardly anything remains of Divio for us to determine the extent of the Roman city. Indeed, though it may have been a pre-Roman Lingones oppidum, we do not know.

Remains and Visit:

A section of Roman road is preserved at Parc de la Colombière, and sections of Roman masonry are visible in the base of one of the churches, though it has been so long since I was in Dijon I no longer remember which. The archaeological museum does have an excellent Roman section.
