History & Occupation:
Originally the tribal capital of the Vocontii, after the Roman conquest, Vasio settled into becoming a thoroughly Romanised town and prospered. Indeed, Vasion is known to have been one of the richest towns in Gaul during the high imperial period. Decline only came (as is so often the case) with the barbarian incursions of the 5th Century.
Remains and Visit:
Around a fifth of the Roman city has been excavated and is open to the public. The civic centre including the forum is beneath the modern town, but a Roman bridge leads to a large area of excavated city, including a well-preserved theatre, much statuary, townhouses, baths and mosaics. Vaison is the largest Roman archaological park in France and is well worth the visit.
