History & Occupation:
Little is known of the history of Pupput. Certainly it existed by the reign of Marcus Aurelius and was already sizeable. It seems to have been moderately successful and influential, though after the fall of Rome, it declines rapidly and disappears from history, the site being settled by charcoal burners in the middle ages, while the centre of local habitation moved to Hammamet, upon whose outskirts the ruins sit.
Remains and Visit:
The ruins of Pupput were discovered quite by chance during the ever-expanding construction of hotels along this stretch of coast. However, the site was rescued and now sits among hotels, shops and beach bars. Despite its prime location in one of the greatest tourist meccas of Tunisia, Pupput seems almost entirely unheard of, largely unvisited and pretty badly tended and unkempt, most of it more resembling waste land than a historical site. The reuins consist of a residential district of the city, with some preserved mosaics in situ and others attached to the surrounding wall. The ruins are hard to make sense of.
